More mystery meat and food additives that you probably don't know about.

* Castoreum - This is one of the ingredients when you read "Natural Flavoring" on the food label. castoreum is the yellowish secretion of the castor sacs located in

the anal glands of the mature North American Beaver (Castor canadensis) and the European Beaver (Castor fiber). yes, anal gland.
* Polydimethylsiloxane - Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) belongs to a group that are commonly referred to as silicones. Its applications range from contact lenses and

medical devices to elastomers; it is also present in shampoos (as dimethicone makes hair shiny and slippery), food (antifoaming agent), caulking, lubricating oils, and

heat-resistant tiles. Wait, did you say food? yep. Used as part of the filler in some processed "meat" products like Chicken McNuggets, which are only partially made

of actual chicken, and in other processed foods and fast food items such as McDonald's French Fries, and Wendy's French fries. PDMS is also a chemical used in Silly

Putty and the silicone filling of breast implants.
(source - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polydimethylsiloxane)
* Carmine - also called Crimson Lake, Cochineal, Natural Red 4, C.I. 75470, or E120. Natural Red 4, sounds safe enough right? But Carmine is actually harvested from

insects. To prepare carmine, the powdered scale insect bodies are boiled in ammonia or a sodium carbonate solution, the insoluble matter is removed by filtering, and

alum is added to the clear salt solution of carminic acid to precipitate the red aluminium salt, called "carmine lake" or "crimson lake."
* Gelatin - yum gelatin! Gelatin is found in most gummy candies as well as other products such as marshmallows, gelatin dessert, and some ice cream, dip and yogurt.

When I was young I thought Gelatin was made from some sort of grass. oh how wrong was I! Gelatin is a mixture of peptides and proteins extracted from the skin, bones,

and connective tissues of animals such as domesticated cattle, chicken, pigs, and fish.

Things you were taught when you were young that are actually incorrect

Lie: Killer Whales Are Whales
Fact: They're actually dolphins, or at least members of the dolphin family until they get uninvited for Thanksgiving after snacking on members of the dolphin family.

Lie: Eagles Make THAT Noise
Fact: The scream that is often associated with eagles in movies (and the start of the Colbert Report) is not an eagle, but a red tailed hawk. Bald eagles actually

sound like "a cross between a squeaky toy and a seagull."

Lie: 1 Dog Year = 7 Human Years
Fact: You've been calculating it wrong. A "dog year" is not 7 human years. The first year of growth is actually more like 10-15 human years, the second year is like 3

-8, while the animal will age 4-5 human years every year after that. It also depends greatly on the breed and size of the dog. You can work off 7 years as an average,

but it's not always right.

Lie: That Dinosaur is a Brontosaurus
Fact: There is no such thing as a brontosaurus. They never existed, yet whenever you see a long necked plant eating dinosaur you think "Brontosaurus!", right? Wrong.

The animal was created when two pieces from different skeletons were mistakenly put together. They discovered the mistake in 1906, but it took until 1979 before all

the museums made the changes. So, we learned about the Brontosaurus while kids nowadays know them as Apatosaurus - the correct name.

Lie: Your Tongue Has Different Sections
Fact: Your tongue isn't divided into sections; every part of your tongue can sense sweet, salty, bitter, etc.

Lie: The North Star is the Brightest in the Sky
Fact: Polaris is not the "brightest star in the sky." It's actually somewhere down near 45 on the list of bright stars. The sun is the brightest star in the sky,

silly.

Facts about Christopher Columbus

Some facts you may not know about Christopher Columbus:

• Columbus didn’t actually “discover” the New World. Not only were there natives living in the Americas for 14,000 years, Leif Ericson found the same territory 500 years before Columbus.

• Columbus wanted gold, and lots of it. His initial ideas for a new trade route to Asia fell by the wayside as he realized how much gold was available in the New World.

• The natives would provide little resistance. According to his own journal, Columbus believed the indigenous Lucayans would not be a significant challenge. “I could conquer the whole of them with fifty men,” he wrote, “and govern them as I pleased.”

• For his second visit, Columbus armed for war. When Columbus returned to the New World, he brought 17 ships and 1,500 men.

• Columbus treated the natives brutally. Columbus demanded treasure, food and sex for his men, and when the Lucayans refused, he ordered their noses and ears cut off to serve as a warning.

• Columbus treated his conquered people harshly. When the Lucayans rebelled, Columbus crushed the rebellion and carted off 500 Lucayans to be sold into slavery in Europe.

• Columbus disrupted the entire economy of three continents. Post-Columbian disease and starvation killed three to five million people over the next fifty years. And the influx of gold disrupted the global economy to the point that African slaves became a dominant commodity.

• On his famous 1492 voyage, Columbus had promised a reward of gold to whoever saw land first. A sailor named Rodrigo de Triana was the first to see land on October 12, 1492: a small island in the present-day Bahamas Columbus named San Salvador. Poor Rodrigo never got the reward however: Columbus kept it for himself, telling everyone he had seen a hazy sort of light the night before. He had not spoken up because the light was indistinct. Rodrigo may have gotten hosed, but there is a nice statue of him sighting land in a park in Seville.

• Columbus died in Spain in 1506, and his remains were kept there for a while before being sent to Santo Domingo in 1537. There they remained until 1795, when they were sent to Havana and in 1898 they supposedly went back to Spain. In 1877, however, a box full of bones bearing his name was found in Santo Domingo. Since then, two cities – Seville, Spain and Santo Domingo – claim to have his remains. In each city, the bones in question are housed in elaborate mausoleums.

The Laguna Copperplate Inscription: Oldest known document in the Philippines

The Laguna Copperplate Inscription  (900 A.D) is a thin copper plate measuring less than 8x12 inches (20x30 cm) and inscribed with small writing hammered into its surface. It was found by the mouth of the Lumbang River in Barangay Wawa, Lumban, Laguna.

It shows heavy Indian cultural influence present in the Philippines before the Spanish colonization in the 16th Century. The places mentioned in the document still exists today, like Tundun or what is now known as Tondo, a district of Manila.

The document states that it releases its bearers, the children of Namwaran, from a debt in gold amounting to 1 kati and 8 suwarnas (865 grams).

English Translation

Long Live! In the Year of Saka 822, month of Waisakha, according to the astronomer.

How Deep can you go? The internet under your internet

Did you know, that there is another part of the internet with contents which are not searchable by your favorite search engine?

Enter the Deep Web. It is generally composed of pages and articles, documents etc. that are dynamically generated, hence not being indexed by conventional search engines.

Mike Bergman, who is credited to have coined the name, said that searching the internet "can be compared to dragging a net across the surface of the ocean: a great deal may be caught in the net, but there is a wealth of information that is deep and therefore missed".

Here are some sources that would better explain Deep web and on how you can search it -

You are What You Eat

To start this blog, I would like to share my recent discovery about apple pies - the fastfood kind. Did you know that apple pies from Mcdonald's contain duck hairs? They use duck hairs for its L-cysteine as a dough conditioner. Imagine a duck, now imagine that duck's hair in your food. Not yucky enough?

well, get this - Women in China sell their hair to chemical processing plants. These hairs are harvested for the L-cysteine. Now, McD's recently reported that almost 80 percent of the L-cysteine they use are from Duck hair...
So what consists of the remaining 20%? Well your guess is as good as mine:
